For fresh powder, fantastic lodging and family fun, consider Keystone, Colorado, for your next winter escape. Located about 100 miles west of Denver International Airport, this Rocky Mountain town spans three major peaks and boasts more than 120 trails, 3,000 skiable acres and a variety of restaurants, making it a go-to winter retreat for skiers and families. To make the most of your time in the mountains, check out these five family-friendly Keystone attractions.

1. Take a Scenic Gondola Ride to Der Fondue Chessel

The famous Der Fondue Chessel restaurant at the top of North Peak offers dining options that include traditional Swiss Gruyere cheese fondue, Caesar salad, meats and seafood cooked on tabletop grills, and chocolate fondue. Strolling musicians play Bavarian songs, including the “Chicken Dance.” A gondola ride up to 11,444 feet provides a spectacular view of Keystone on the way to the restaurant, which is open throughout the winter season.

2. Bundle Up for a Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride

Get ready to dash through the snow on either a dinner or scenic sleigh ride departing from the Keystone Adventure Center at Lakeside Village. The dinner option includes a 20-minute horse-drawn sleigh ride to a ranch homestead, where visitors learn Keystone history and enjoy hot chocolate, soup, homemade biscuits, your choice of a meat or vegetarian entree and a slice of Dutch apple pie topped with homemade ice cream. The other option — a 60-minute scenic sleigh ride through Soda Creek Valley — also provides riders with an overview of Keystone’s history and a stop at the homestead for a refreshing drink.

3. Ice Skate on Keystone Lake

Keystone is home to one of the largest Zamboni-maintained outdoor skating rinks in North America, which makes it the go-to place for ice skating with a view. Entertainment at the 5-acre lake includes music, holiday lights and pickup hockey, and the picturesque setting is one of the best spots to snap a family photo.

Keystone Resort’s Kidtopia offers worlds of free winter fun for kiddos. Take the gondola ride to the top of Dercum Mountain to explore the World’s Largest Snow Fort — the ultimate snow playground with slides, mazes and tunnels. Additionally, the whole family can march in the village parade, hunt for the elusive Sasquatch during the Bigfoot Adventure Walk, participate in arts and crafts activities and enjoy free cookies at 4 p.m. every day at the Dercum Square Ice Rink.

During the day or night, adventurous families can take the River Run Gondola to Adventure Point and hop on a tube for a fun slide back down the hill. Once at the bottom, a state-of-the-art conveyor belt delivers tubers (and their tubes) back up the hill for another run. Reservations are required, and participants must be at least 42 inches tall.
