Once your flight arrives, follow the signs in the airport that will take you to the airport's rental car station. At the Alamo counter, pick up the keys for your vehicle, whether it is an economical compact car or a big SUV with a bold attitude. Then, check out the following attractions that are only a short drive from the airport.
Only 6 miles away from the airport, you'll find the oldest building in Broward County, the Stranahan House; it was built in 1901 and served as the home of the area's first permanent white settler. The old-style furniture and antique photographs will delight your inner history buff. Daily tours are available, and you don't have to make reservations.
About 18 miles away from the airport is Flamingo Gardens. This old botanical garden has an aviary that contains flamingos and other eye-catching birds. You'll also find a crocodile lagoon and a citrus grove. There is a small museum in the garden where you can learn more about its history. When you get hungry, go to one of the convenient places to eat located throughout the garden.
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
Less than 10 miles from the airport is Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, which boasts 180 acres of opportunities to enjoy Florida's amazing weather. Rent a canoe and paddle through a freshwater lagoon, go swimming at one of the park's beaches, or hike along one of the short trails.
